How Chrysler Works

Sometimes it's good to take a look back at history, so we can appreciate the things we have around us now. With that hint towards Thanksgiving, here is an unrelated look back at the history of Chrysler, complete with some impressive auto pictures:

bit.ly/QYxm0G

"That first Chrysler was the foundation of the company's early success. It was designed with instrumental assistance from three superb engineers: Fred Zeder, Carl Breer, and Owen Skelton, the "Three Musketeers" who would dominate the design of Chrysler Corporation products throughout the '30s.

Power came from a high-compression 202-cubic-inch L-head six with seven main bearings and 68 brake horsepower -- 0.3 bhp per cubic inch, outstanding for the day. Also featured were four-wheel hydraulic brakes (well ahead of most rivals), full-pressure lubrication, attractive styling, and competitive prices around $1500. It couldn't miss, and it didn't. By 1927, production was up from 32,000 to some 182,000."

Why Late Mergers Make Us Angry

Ever wonder why you get so mad when somebody merges late? Take a look at this article from Howstuffworks.com to understand the psychology of driving: bit.ly/Q2eeii

"Vanderbilt suggests that a driver's merging style reveals his personality. There's an old cliché in driving studies," he says: "'A man drives as he lives.'" New York Times columnist Cynthia Gorney boiled the debate down to two main driving personalities: "lineuppers," who take their turn, and "sidezoomers," who race to the head of the line and dart into an opening at the last second. This is maddening to the well-behaved lineuppers. In fact, a Minnesota Department of Transportation study revealed that 15 percent of drivers actually admitted to straddling lanes to block late mergers in construction zones.

Gorney finds her description of sidezoomers gets a spirited response from everyone she questions. "When I raised [this] with my father, who is 83, he startled me by suggesting a longer label that included more bad words than I believe I have ever heard him use at one time." She even found a University of Washington engineer who had his own name for the two main merging personality types: cheaters and vigilantes.

Leon James, a.k.a. "Dr. Driving," whose Web site has a string of articles under the heading "The Great Merging Debate," says merging areas are especially challenging because there are basically two styles of merging that are often incompatible. When early mergers see the late mergers zip by, "most drivers feel irritated, some angry and roadrageous," he says. Trying to block them is "dangerous, illegal and begging for a confrontation.""

7 Myths About Motor Oil

Edmunds.com sorts through the facts and fiction surrounding motor oil, including the infamous 3,000 miles rule. Follow the address to find out more:

bit.ly/Sh8Mn8

http://www.edmunds.com/car-care/top-7-urban-legends-about-motor-oil.html

"4. Check the oil on the dipstick. If it's black, change the oil. Experts say this is a myth, as is the related notion that you can identify spent oil by smell. "That is old school," says Kristen Huff, vice president of Blackstone Laboratories in Fort Wayne, Indiana. "Oil is meant to get dark — it means it's doing its job," she says. As GM's Matt Snider says in this video, different additives change the oil's color. The bottom line: Black oil still has plenty of life left in it.

5. When you buy a new car, change your oil at 3,000 miles to remove metal particles from the engine break-in process. There might be a grain of truth to this, according to the experts at Blackstone. Oil samples from engines during the first 3,000 miles of driving show elevated "wear-in" metal levels, coming from the pistons and camshafts, says Ryan Stark, Blackstone's president. But he added, "To me, it doesn't make that much difference because if the filings are big enough to cause damage, they will be taken out by the oil filter."

However, a Honda spokesman says its cars come from the factory with a special oil formulation for the break-in period. Honda advises owners to not change the oil early. Stark said Blackstone Laboratories' test of Honda's break-in oil shows it contains molybdenum-disulfide, an anti-wear additive. But Stark said Honda is the only manufacturer he knows that's using special break-in oil. The take-away? If there are any special break-in recommendations from the manufacturer, follow them. And consider analyzing the oil at 3,000 miles.

6. Once you use synthetic oil, you always have to use it. This is a straight-up myth. In fact, the line between synthetic oil and petroleum-based oil is blurring because the two types of oil are often blended, says Edmunds Engineering Editor Jason Kavanagh. "As long as the oil meets the service and viscosity requirements set out in your owner's manual, you can switch back and forth as much as you want," he says. For more information, watch this short video."

How to Avoid The Top 10 Auto Emergencies

Check out this relatively old, but extremely useful article on handling the top 10 driving emergencies. Reading this now could just save you from a worse accident: bit.ly/TzjKtv

"In this first part, I'll explain how to survive tire failures and stuck throttles. In Part 2, we will tell you how to make an emergency stop and how to drive around an emergency with the help of ABS. Part 3 will explain what to do if you run off the road and will also teach you how to manage sliding front tires or skidding rear tires. And if you think you already know how to handle these emergencies; trust me — you don't."

Around the Ron Lewis Lots in October

Thank you for visiting the Ron Lewis Automotive Group online! Here's our news from "Around the Lots" this October:

  • We are hiring! We're seeking automotive technicians for positions across our dealership group and would like to talk to you whether you have years of experience, or are an apprentice. Email aharding@ronlewisautomotive.com if you are interested.
  • Who doesn't want a great deal? This month Chrysler is extending "Ram Power Days" and its "Jeep Celebration Event."  This means great incentives on the 2012 Jeep Liberty and 2012 Ram 1500 Quad Cab 4x4 Hemi (say that 10 times fast).  With 3x the inventory, we have the best selection of Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram vehicles in Western Pennsylvania!
  • Don't miss our new Service and Parts coupons now posted that are redeemable at each one of our locations in Pleasant Hills, Cranberry, Waynesburg and Beaver Falls. Click here for more details.  Now's the time to think about "winterizing" your vehicle before the really cold weather hits.
  • What's your favorite car or truck color? I vote for my "Dozer" colored Jeep Wrangler Rubicon.   Annual rankings">Annual rankings on the most popular vehicle colors were just released by PPG Industries, Inc, the automotive paint supplier to General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co. and others. White is the reigning most popular vehicle color, with Silver ranking second.  So maybe "Dozer" isn't in the top 10 list, but I'm liking how the color "pops!"
  • This month we'll be finishing the Jeep Grand Cherokee "Go Anywhere, Do Anything" vacation package giveaway on our  Facebook">Facebook page. Take a look at the vacation packages being offered and enter to win!
  • Speaking of Facebook, we're celebrating now that we've crossed the 500 fan mark and our $500 Apple Gift Cardwinner has been announced! We're already on the way to 600 and will give another one away with the 1,000th fan. Thank you for your interest and involvement on our page! Whether you are a first-time driver, seeking a family-friendly vehicle, work truck, or a fun luxury car to add to your collection, we're committed to working with you to find the best vehicle to fit your lifestyle and budget.
We want you to have an exceptional experience at our dealerships that you'll want to tell your family and friends about. We consider all customer feedback an opportunity to give our staff credit where credit is due, or as an opportunity to continually improve our dealerships.

October Is Car Care Month

October is Fall Car Care Month and there are a few tips that can help you keep your car in top shape for the upcoming Winter season.

The Car Care Council recommends 10 basic maintenance procedures to keep your vehicle operating at its best:

1. Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering, brake and transmission as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant.

2. Check the hoses and belts to make sure they are not cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or showing signs of excessive wear.

3. Check the battery and replace if necessary. Make sure the connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free.

4. Check the brake system annually and have the brake linings, rotors and drums inspected at each oil change.

5. Inspect the exhaust system for leaks, damage and broken supports or hangers if there is an unusual noise. Exhaust leaks can be dangerous and must be corrected without delay.

6. Schedule a tune-up to help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy and produce the lowest level of emissions.

Crazy Fun With Jeep

What's the most fun you've ever had with your Jeep? A roadtrip? Mudding in the woods? How about wake boarding through a canal?

Autoblog writes:

These are the kinds of activities that one may conjure up and say "what if?" but few ever actually follow through on. That said, we don't recommend trying this at home (err... your "home" canal, that is).

The video, by Devin Graham, perhaps inaccurately named "Ghetto Wakeboarding," shows a pack of suburban kids towing a series of wakeboard-riding daredevils down a rural canal by way of Jeep Wrangler. It looks like a heck of a lot of fun.

We say that the video may be inaccurately named, because we could never envision this taking place in the ghetto. As a matter of fact, this looks like a pretty well-to-do group of teens, on a pristine late-model Jeep and filmed on a Canon 5D Mark III– not an inexpensive piece of equipment by any stretch.

See video of the Jeep wakeboarding daredevil: http://www.autoblog.com/2012/09/17/jeep-wrangler-tow-ropes-canal-wakeboarding-fun/

Jeep Wrangler: Altitude Edition

Are you obsessed with Jeep? The new Jeep Wrangler Altitude Edition offers hardcore fun and durability at a great price.

Automobilemag:

As a former 1988 Jeep Wrangler owner, it's amazing to me how far this model has come. My '88 was punishing over every road surface, not comfortable off-road, and spent the summer months without a top or doors. When enough mud built up inside the tub, I'd just hose it out. I learned how to drive off-road in that Jeep and it kicked off a mild obsession with all things Jeep that still flares up from time to time.

Doug Cosgrove - Employee Of The Month

Doug Cosgrove at Cranberry Pre-Owned was named Employee of the Month in August – Here’s a review one of our customers, Angela, posted about him on Cars.com in August, which highlights why people love to work with him:

http://www.cars.com/dealers/reviews.action?dlId=27459

"I was extremely happy with my service at Pre-Owned Cranberry. I had emailed them originally with my payment requirements and the vehicle I had wanted after searching online. I drove over an hour to the dealership. I was tremendously impressed with Doug Cosgrove, my sales associate. His demeanor, his friendliness, and his overall approach to the process was far and above any other associate I have ever dealt with at another dealer. I purchased a Jeep Grand Cherokee and very pleased with everything this dealership had to offer. I will definitely continue to purchase my vehicles there in the future." –Angela

Thank you Doug for all of your hard work and commitment!

More Muscle, Less Thirst

If you love the Dodge Ram as much as we do, you'll sleep easy knowing the new model is going to be the holy grail of trucks. Ram is dominating again with the 1500 making it more powerful, and even more MPG oriented.

Car And Driver writes:

In a market where fuel economy is paramount—particularly for full-size pickups—the Ram’s new standard powertrain raises the stakes in both power and thrift. Chrysler’s 3.6-liter DOHC 24-valve 60-degree Pentastar V-6 replaces the previous SOHC 3.7-liter 90-degree 12-valve V-6, an upgrade that’s analogous to swapping your tired old plow horse for a derby-ready thoroughbred. Output jumps from a seriously anemic 215 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque to a robust 305 and 269, respectively.

The Dart: Crushing The Competition

Dodge has met its destiny with the Dart... it's destiny... to CRUSH the competition and it's starting fresh with the Compact Car Segment.

The LA Times calls the Dart a Party Crasher saying:

Conspicuously absent from this soiree has been Dodge. Its previous offering was a hatchback thing called the Caliber, as in "Boy, this is a really low-caliber product." To no one's disappointment, it left the party in 2011. But now Dodge has returned for the 2013 model year. And this time, it brought along its Italian majority-owner Fiat.

Behold the Dodge Dart, a sedan that starts at $16,790 and should have no trouble making friends. It's American history riding on European success.

PHOTOS: The 2013 Dodge Dart

Beneath the Dart's curvaceous body panels and trademark design cues of current Dodge products is an assemblage of parts sourced from Fiat. (Fiat, you'll remember, owns a majority stake in Chrysler, which owns Dodge). The Dart shares its chassis, suspension, an engine and a transmission with another Fiat entity, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta (pronounced like Romeo's paramour with an A at the end).

This Alfa is a popular sell in Europe and critically appreciated, so Dodge decided to use it as a point of reentry into the critical compact segment on our shores. The company then thumbed through the pages of its automotive history and plucked the successful Dart nameplate last seen in 1976. It will ring nostalgic for some generations, and completely fresh for others.

Amped Up Attitude

Jeep has taken a bold product and made it even more bold by adding some attitude.

There's no better fit for this change than the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8 destined for 2013 buyers.

Cars.com writes:

Jeep's amped-up Grand Cherokee SRT8 is already loaded with attitude, but apparently it's not enough. Two aggressive-looking appearance packages will join the SRT8 lineup for 2013.

The white Alpine and black Vapor special edition models add a new Black Vapor chrome finish to the standard 20-inch wheels; a black-gloss exterior finish; new hood and door badges; and a unique grill, light bar and step pad.

Collector Car Appreciation Day

Are you a serious car collector? Well, today is YOUR day!

Friday is national "Collector Car Appreciation Day." It is a day to commemorate America's time-tested love affair with the automobile. The SEMA Action Network encourages everyone to celebrate not just on Friday but throughout the month of July .

The date marks the third commemoration in what has become an annual event to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society. The SEMA Action Network is again working to secure a U.S. Congressional resolution to recognize the day's national significance.

In previous years, the U.S. Senate helped launch national Collector Car Appreciation Day by passing resolutions at the SAN's request. As a result, thousands of Americans have gathered at car cruises, parades and other events to celebrate U.S. automotive heritage. By taking part in these events around the country, these automotive enthusiasts and related businesses ensured that their passion was honored and recognized.

Scared of Faded Car Paint?

Summer can be a great time! Fun in the sun can include camping, visits to your favorite water parks, relaxation and much more, but there's a downside to all the sun... It can be damaging to your car paint!

Sunlight can cause oxidation which causes fading, and that's bad news, but you're not at a total loss! There are steps the average person can take to PREVENT sun damage to their car.

1) Park in a shaded area: Obviously the easiest way to avoid sun damage is to avoid the sun altogether. Paint is tough, but if you're the typical 9-5 worker, that's 8 hours a day your car can be exposed to sun rays. We suggest seeking out shaded areas for parking, even if it means walking an extra block.

2) Clean off bugs: Insects not only make your car look gross, but the small amount of acid contained in some insects can be enough to penetrate your paint, so be sure to wash your car often... which brings us to our next step...

3) Dry thoroughly: Cleaning your car is great, but you don't want to let water settle. Water can leave behind minerals including salt, which is harmful to the outer coatings protecting your paint, which in the end, can lead to fading.

4) Finally... wax: Wax is the ultimate protector. Waxing fills in small scuffs, and rejuvenates the outer layers of your paint keeping them like new so be sure to wax after washing your car. It's a great way to insure it's dry, and keeps it looking as glossy as the day you bought it.

Chrysler: From The Ashes

Chrysler Corp. has been through a lot over the years, but now the makers of the Chrysler 200 are the fastest growing automobiles in the class.

Chrysler Blog writes:

How did the Chrysler 200 rise from the ashes to become a segment leader, growing faster than competitors like the Hyundai Sonata, Ford Fusion, and Toyota Camry? It has a refined suspension and an elegant design that looks as smooth as it drives. Add an available 3.6L V6 engine that turns out a best-in-class 283 HP and an EPA estimated 29 HWY MPG and it starts making a lot of sense.

Our rebirth wasn’t destined to happen, so we did it the only way we knew how – with hard work and an unwavering dedication to making the best vehicles in the world. Visit Chrysler.com for more about the fastest growing sedan in its class.

New Location Now Open!

Our biggest news this month is that our newest location is now open for business: Cranberry Pre-Owned is just yards away from our current Cranberry Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram on Route 19.  This new facility showcases Cranberry Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram’s pre-owned vehicles, as well as selected pre-owned vehicles from across the Ron Lewis Automotive Group.  You can find this location's current inventory atwww.cranberrypreowned.com... (or Under the above Pre-Owned tab above).  I was there today and the showroom is fresh and the lot is stocked -- I have to say, I was tempted to leave my kiddie-mobile Navigator there and drive home in the beautiful black 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class that was taken in on trade...on second thought, I *am* going back again this week...

Product News from Around the Lot...

*Gearing up for spring, we now have hundreds of new and pre-owned vehicles that are either already in stock (or in transit to our lots), and we’re able to offer you many options to fit your lifestyle and budget.  Our in-store and online sales team is available to answer any questions you may have.

*It's Ram Truck Month at Cranberry Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram -- Come by and learn about the manufacturer specials going on with the various truck models we carry...

*A big topic these days has been fuel-economy -- Did you know we have over 15 different models with 30 MPG or better?  Check out cars like the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze, 2012 Chrysler 200 and Dodge Caliber!

*Speaking of fuel economy...Wanted!  Trade-ins...We're seeking small cars with low mileage...If you own one, now might be a smart time for a trade-in evaluation and opportunity to look at some new vehicle options...

*Looking for a cool vehicle with muscle?  Check out our Call of Duty Jeep Wranglers and SRT8 models at Cranberry Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram...

I will close with a sincere thank you to our customers who have taken the time to share their feedback and positive experience on the top review sites online -- Sharing your thoughts on sites such as women-drivers.com and Google Places has become such a important resource for prospective buyers -- We're working hard to earn your business and earn your positive feedback. -- We want to knock your socks off!

Please let us know how we can serve any of your automotive needs.  We look forward to working with you!
